Stereotypes

We all heard of stereotypes and or used them. There are many types of stereotypes; there are gender, racial and sexuality stereotypes. Stereotyping makes people generalize things. More often, they are all false assumptions. Though there are both positive and negative stereotypes, a majority of them are offensive. People generally stereotype out of bias against a particular group of people or religion. There

Here are some examples of stereotype:

Examples Of Stereotypes

  • All blond women are dumb.
  • Christians are homophobic. They are blinded by God and will recruit you if you go near them.
  • All politicians are philanders and think only of personal gain and benefit.
  • Girls are only concerned about physical appearance.
  • Guys are messy and unclean.
  • Men who spend too much time on the computer or read are geeks.
  • Men who are not into sports are termed as gay.
  • All Blacks are great basketball players.
  • All Indians are deeply spiritual.
  • All Latinos dance well.
  • All Whites are successful.
  • Asians have high IQs. They are smarter than most in Math and Science. These people are more likely to succeed in school..
  • All Canadians are exceptionally polite.
  • French are romantic.
  • All Asians know kung fu.
  • All Muslims are terrorists.

When it comes to the truck commercial they are using generalizations. in the commercial they used different focus groups to prove to viewers that the truck is for a real man. One specific focus group that stuck out to me was the females. The question for the females was "Which man do you think is more sexy" they all chose the man with red truck. This gender stereotype can be translated into jobs, clothing and choice of lifestyle. For example this truck stereotype is like comparing a man in a dress to a man wearing pants. This an example of assimilation in a society. Once the majority of an area has been accustom to social norm in that area the minorities that join the community later will be indirectly be assimilated to fit in. After the assimilation has been successfully implemented into the community stereotypes and generalizations begin start. For example boys should like blue and girls should like pink. After someone or something breaks the social norm assumptions and generalizations begin in this instance a boy that like the colour pink is associated with homosexuality. These generalization are very hurtful and can change someone's true identity and their future choices in life.

This Chevrolet commercial reminded me of the video "Like a Girl"

In the video: "Like a Girl" it shows what the world uses the term "like a girl" and what young girls think it is to be "Like a girl". This video shows how the world uses the phrase "Like a girl" as a derogatory term. At the end of the video Always showed the video using the female athletes to give the message of how it is to be like a girl. The message of the video is to show how being a girl is just as normal as being a guy. Also by giving young girls the vision of not being able to run, throw and fight stops them from meeting aspirations that they want to pursue.

  1. Very strong messages! I love the video. So inspiring to stop the stereotype that girls are weak. We (girls) are just like anyone, we perform the same tasks. Also this last picture of the skeletons. It is showing that we are the same but with different personalities. No one should be entitled to judge use by appearances.

  3. I really like the examples you have given about stereotypes, the video, and the picture! You have really proved your point and I agree with what you have said. Everyone is equal and there is no difference in gender. We should not be judged by who we are whether we are boy or girl, it should not matter. Nice post!!

  6. I admire how you compared the issues that we face in today's society and how you point out specific problems we face as a world. The pictures and the points listed are good examples of pointing out stereotypes and how stereotypes doesn't mean were exactly of different species in that sort. I also like the video presented for this subject because it's a good representation to this subject matter
